Joey Bada$$ made waves in 2012 upon the release of his 1999 mixtape which led many to laud him and claim he was the redeemer of the 90s hip-hop sound. Now a little over a year later the leader of the Pro Era hip-hop outfit has released his second official mixtape for a free download. The cover of Summer Knights seems to be able to perfectly describe the overall vibe of the mixtape, with the classically picturesque painting representing the overall relaxed sounds of the beats, but the gritty graffiti and abandoned bikes remind the listener of Joey’s youthful energy. Fans will be happy that Joey stay true to his vintage 90s sound and, due to his newfound fame, the mixtape features a greater selection of producers such as Lee Banon, Kirk Knight, Alchemist, Statik Selectah and MF DOOM. This has lead him to be more selective of the instrumentals he spits his heavily wordplay ridden rhymes over, and frequently sees beautiful piano and wood-wind samples be the backdrop for Joey’s lyrics.
