About a month ago, soulful folk rock 10 piece Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros released a single entitled Better Days, which was revealed to be the first taste of the group’s third self-titled album, set to be due on the 23rd of July.
A week ago, they released their second single, This Life, which has fans gearing up for the much-awaited latest album of the roots indie rock band. This Life is a surprisingly solemn tune to begin with, perhaps the most akin to a ballad the band has released to date; a unexpected choice for a second single. However, the raw emotion and bluesy melody tat drives this track leaves the listener ultimately feeling pretty optimistic at the end. Front man Alex Ebert said that the new album contained “the rawest, most liberated, most rambunctious stuff we’ve done” which definitely sings true in this soulful track, with poignant and powerful lyrics such as “this life aint for me now.” However before you break out the box of Kleenex, wait until 1:35, where the very powerful chorus of the band enters the song and uplifts it dramatically to the point where it sounds like a soulful gospel song, with the screeching church organs, harmonic in-sync voices and emotional shriek-singing of Ebert driving it through.
The song travels on waves, between the powerful choruses with the entire group singing and smashing their instruments, and the intimate raw emotion from Ebert’s verses where you swear he’s sitting down with you alone pouring his heart out. This song reminds any fan of the band exactly why they kick ass; they’re the best damn soulful neo-psychedelic roots/indie carnival rock band that ever created their own irresistible and uplifting genre.
