Perth producers Jaymee Franchina and Jeremy Smith released an EP earlier this year entitled B.I.G Flume that has just recently gotten acclaim both online and on Triple J, and rightfully so. The concept is simple: mashup Flume’s iconic self-titled album with the most familiar raps from the king of hip-hop himself – Notorious B.I.G. The common ground that both these artists have is the incredible smoothness of their songs; Biggie’s raps are flawlessly and effortlessly delivered and Flume’s hip-hop influenced electronica is similarly done. The concept of this EP sounds so strange but works oh so well, with mashup-appropriate names such as ‘Warm Suidical Thoughts’ and ‘Having Starry Eyes is a Deadly Combination.’ My personal favourite is ‘Can I Get Wit Ya in Zimbabwe’ which compliments Biggie’s legendary rhymes with the harmonic, mellow and somewhat poignant beats of producing mastermind Flume, creating a mashup masterpiece. The song is addictive; the catchy melodic Zimbabwe brings a modern new light to Biggie’s raps and the two work perfectly together. I was skeptical at first but after listening to how flawlessly each song is created and produced, I realized that if you love two things, why not put them together, like peanut butter and jelly! ‘
This EP is available for free download here (yay these guys!) and is definitely worth a listen.
