While the experimental hip-hop trio Young Father’s have been around since 2008, 2013 has seen them blast onto many people’s radar after they rereleased their mixtape TAPE ONE on Anticon Records. The sequel to that mixtape, originally released in 2011, has finally come to fruition and is available to stream via Dazed Digital’s Soundcloud. What is evident from the tape is that the group has an eclectic style to their music, with the songs varying drastically in both theme and texture. Young Father’s can make moody and emotive songs, demonstrated on the lead single and first song on the tape, I Heard, featuring crooning vocals and subdued rapping which creates a weird atmosphere for the song. This is followed by songs with a more abrasive tone, such as Queen is Dead, which explodes at the one-minute mark into an intense synth driven nightmare, and the threatening beat, which follows the sweet introduction on the track Way Down in the Hole demonstrates their variety once again. The group is also a master of funky percussion that is the main impetus on tracks like Only Child and Ebony Sky. Even though the group experiments with a broad spectrum of sounds and influences they have definitely established their own singular sound and TAPE TWO is a testament to the self-described psychedelic hip-hop boy band’s creativity.
