Yesterday, Melbourne-based electronic duo Willow Beats released their latest EP entitled Alchemy, and let me just say, it’s one of the most spectacular EP’s I’ve heard in a very long time. The first two tracks, Alchemy and Elemental had already been released on Soundcloud and were receiving overwhelming Internet love, and the three new tracks released on the EP definitely did not disappoint. The entire album is sharp, engaging, catchy and brilliantly produced.
Alchemy is a effervescent and vibrant opening to the EP, with their iconic fractured pulsations driving the song’s beats with harmonic and catchy vocals playfully bouncing over the top. The ability to create a chaotic yet restrained song highlights the sheer artistry that this entire EP boasts.
Elemental is my favourite song at the moment. The entrancing vocals singing hauntingly romantic lyrics carry you throughout the captivating and melodic tune that I guarantee you will be in your head for the rest of the day. The song is dark, hypnotizing and addictive and is a true testament of the unique experimental electronica that Willow Beats have created and mastered.
Blue is the most emotional and poignant of the EP, showing their ability to still mesmerize you without the bustling electronic chaos thrown at you in the other songs. This song is the only track that Narayana Johnson sings on (I say keep it up!). It is beautifully harmonic, and its serenity makes you feel like you are floating in the middle of the ocean.
I see Incantation as a happy medium between the poignant Blue and the energetic Alchemy. It uses the same iconic fracturing of beats to pull you in then lulls you with the ever-enchanting vocals of Kalyani Ellis and helps increase the mellow vibe of the EP.
Finally, Cog Goblin (the name captures its essence very accurately) is the new response to their previous song Grom The Betrayer, in that it’s less melodically driven but shows Narayana’s impeccable producing skills through a dark and twisted mash of electronic creepiness (for lack of a better description).
All in all, this EP is truly amazing and is definitely worth a purchase and a listen, as well as their older stuff from their first self-titled EP.
