My mind raced, attempting to fathom the sheer multiplicity of musical ingenuity that would result in British wunderkind King Krule collaborating with electronic musical duo ‘Mount Kimbie’, with the track a feature off Mount Kimbie’s Cold Spring Fault Less Youth. For those who are not familiar with either of these artists, then let me enlighten you. Archy Marshall, more commonly known as King Krule, is the 19-year-old British singer/songwriter/musician who has quite literally been turning heads all around the world with musical genius well beyond his years. His low key, yet poetic take on the indie rock genre with tracks such as ‘out getting ribs’ and ‘noose of jah city’ have been some of most exceptional tracks on the underground music scene in the last few years. Marshall’s only flaw seems to be the prolonged amount of time between the releases of new material that keeps his fans in almost delirium, anticipating what he has in store next. The track ‘You took your time’ is by no means an exception, kicking off with King Krule’s distinguishably apathetic and emotive vocal flow floating over the beautifully simplistic and understated beat and instrumentals that has become trademark to British musicians and producers Dominic Maker and Kai Campos. The track takes a pretty ambitious transition at its midpoint shifting from the electronically comprised instrumental to an acoustic one with the introduction of some refined yet uplifting drum cymbals and tom playing in addition to a subtle bass line insertion – the two discernably different halves of the song seem to act as an a testament for both artists dissimilar musical styles accumulated naturalistically into the one song.
Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, will be released May 28 via Warp – where Marshall will also be featuring on another track entitled ‘Meter, Pale, Tone’ . Check out ‘You took your time’ for yourself below!
