Over the past month, songs from the Jay-Z produced star-studded soundtrack for “The Great Gatsby” have been appearing all over the Internet with incredible songs from Lana Del Ray, Florence and the Machine, Jay Z, Sia, Gotye and more. One of the most recent dropped was the new track ‘Together” by The xx. This song follows the band’s iconic style of haunting and gloomy minimalism but with an interesting twist that references the 1920’s setting of the film.
It starts like a regular ‘xx’ song, with a simple yet melancholy melody, strongly reverberated vocal and a focus on the bass. As the song progresses, melodic harmonies echo above a beautifully minimal melody, still creating an emotionally charged piece. The allusion to the film’s style comes from the symphonic and dramatic movie-esque ending where a 1920’s-sounding orchestra enters for a minute or so to provide an unexpected backdrop for the haunting vocals. When this strips away, the resonating bass sound lingers til the song fades out, which is very conventional of The xx. This track really impressive and shows that despite their specific style, the band can be versatile and really create some beautiful music.
