Succeeding the release of their 2010 sophomore LP ‘Congratulations’, the duo consisting of Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden (better known as the renown, ‘MGMT’) have given us our first taste of what is to come from their third and upcoming self entitled album.
Firstly, however, a bit of brief history.
The bands previous album ‘Congratulations’, flabbergasted many as they strayed away from the musical sound and songwriting style of their debut, ‘Oracular Spectacular’, that generated much of the bands initial success and exposure; an album which was characterised by its catchy vocal hooks and synth melodies that produced many a radio friendly track. However, in ‘Congratulations’ the duo opted for a far more experimental and abstract sound, far from the more conventional and pop-pier tunes that were a trademark to their debut. Whilst this did indeed anger many of their fans who had come to love to the ‘MGMT’ that were indeed responsible for some of the most memorable and dance-able youth anthems of 2008, the album received global critical acclaim. And it is here, where MGMT pick up where they left off in ‘Congratulations’, in the release their new single ‘Alien Days’.
The track itself, very much has a galactic theme as suggested in the title. Portrayed with an array space-aged sounding instrumentation, saturated in reverb – the song has a strong hypnotic and blissful nature whilst maintaing some meaningful texture and diversity. The track only proves to be, yet another example that demonstrates the pairs knack of being able to create imaginative and free flowing, yet masterfully constructed music.
