Tyler the creator’s opening words in fellow Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt’s new single ‘WHOA’ will provide nothing but comfort for all the sceptics who classed the Californian rapper as ‘soft ‘after Chum; Tyler explicitly opens the song with – ‘ you think because you made chum and you got all personal…that…we wont go back to that old 2010 shit.’ ‘
WOAH’ is the second single to drop in anticipation of Earl Sweatshirts sophomore LP Doris, and it sees a beefy, swaggering beat backing Earl’s agressive (and slightly less pre-pubescent than 2010) voice, peppered by some droning synth tones, and a classy little piano ditty that features in the chorus. Tyler’s fingerprints are all over this track, which is something that does slightly detract from the originality of the song, with almost identical synth patches that were used on Goblin (Tyler even chips in for a chorus and verse himself). All in all, the track demystifies where Earl is at: he’s perhaps grown a bit out of the 16 year old kid that released Earl , but he has still retained the same swagger and nefariousness that made his so loveable in the first place.
